Jessica Irvin, VP People & Operations

I’m from Louisville, Kentucky and studied Chemical Engineering at the University of Kentucky. I graduated during COVID and found refuge in Carbondale, CO where I spent my days skiing, running, biking, and hiking. In 2022, I moved to Boston, MA with Woodmac and at the start of 2024 I moved to New York City to take the Senior Solutions Architect role with Vortexa.

During college, I started working at Genscape and focused on training neural networks to monitor refinery units. After completing school, I joined Wood Mackenzie as Research Analyst covering products and research across oil storage, transportation, and refining.

Fun fact: I trained for 8 months for a gravel bike race across the desert in Colorado and Utah. It was canceled the night before for rain.

What does day-to-day life in your role look like?

My mornings typically consist of meeting with internal teams, speaking with clients, and catching up with colleagues in Europe and Asia before they log off for the day. The back half of my day is reserved for more technical work: building solutions with our API/SDK and investigating new use cases for our datasets and upcoming products.

What would you say is the most interesting aspect of your role?

The unique insight and detail we get into how our clients work and finding creative solutions to meet their needs.

What was your path to joining Vortexa?

In past roles, my most fulfilling work was creating new products and curating solutions for clients and internal research efforts. When Vortexa pitched a role centered around those key things, it was a no-brainer to join.

Vortexa is filled with a ton of incredibly talented people that are all willing to lend a helping hand and answer any question.
What kind of qualities does a person need to have to succeed at Vortexa?

Curiosity, adaptability, and a collaborative spirit.

What do you like about the culture?

The openness. Everyone is accessible, everyone wants to help, everyone is working towards a common goal. Vortexa is filled with a ton of incredibly talented people that are all willing to lend a helping hand and answer any question.

The best part of this role is working with the brilliant minds across the company and tackling new problems in innovative ways.
Who do you collaborate with?

One of the best parts of the Solutions Architect role is you get to interface with most of the teams across the org. Our team sits at the nexus of a lot of the cool things ongoing at Vortexa.

We curate solutions for clients with product specialists, customer success managers, and sales. We pass the insight gleaned from our clients onto the product team and certain solutions may get dedicated development time. We support the market analysis team and often seek their wisdom when creating a solution around a specific part of the market. When diagnosing a technical issue we frequently look to DPT for their wizardry. The list goes on!

What are the first three things you do on a Monday morning?

Get some exercise if I can, chug some coffee, and then catch up with the team.

What energises you most about working as a Senior Solutions Architect at Vortexa?

Creative collaboration. Our team is often tasked with creating something that hasn’t been done before, which forces you to try things you never have. The best part of this role is working with the brilliant minds across the company and tackling new problems in innovative ways.
