Mateusz is a Graduate Data Engineer based in London, developing scalable and maintainable data pipelines that ensure great data quality which analysts and data scientists use. He moved to the UK in 2019 to pursue studies in bioengineering where an interest in software development sparked for the first time.

Prior to joining the company, Mateusz worked in various computer vision research branches, starting from jaw lesion detection based on radiography images to building deep learning models for 3D object detection for autonomous vehicles. Eventually, he dropped the path to pursue new challenges.

Fun fact: Mateusz can name every country by its flag.

What does day-to-day life in your role look like?

The only constant and certain aspect of my role is brewing myself a cup of coffee in the morning. Other than that, every day can be different which makes the work exciting. Usually, I collaborate with other engineers, address raised issues, implement new features, and meet with the product team on stand-ups.

What would you say is the most interesting aspect of your role?

Working with technologies that I had never worked with prior to joining Vortexa. Also, collaboration with driven and talented people on complex projects.

What was your path to joining Vortexa?

After my graduation I realised that the computer vision field was not necessarily the right fit for me so I started to think about other branches that leverage AI solutions to create value. Later on, I came across Vortexa which happened to combine my interests in technology and investments. This motivated me to apply and eventually to become a part of the company.

Vortexa has a lot of amazing, driven people from whom you can learn a lot.
What kind of qualities does a person need to have to succeed at Vortexa?

I believe that curiosity and the willingness to learn and grow are the key factors. Additionally, collaborative and problem-solving spirit is crucial.

What do you like about the culture?

Everyone is welcoming towards everybody in the company. This great sense of hospitality has been present ever since my first day. Vortexa has a lot of amazing, driven people from whom you can learn a lot.

As a graduate, I still have a lot to learn and Vortexa gives me a great environment to do so, which is perfect!
Who do you collaborate with?

I mostly collaborate with senior software engineers, data scientists, people from the product team, and other data engineers. Occasionally I have the opportunity to work with analysts which is always eye-opening from the domain knowledge perspective.

What are the first three things you do on a Monday morning?

Opening my laptop, brewing some coffee, and catching up with messages on Slack.

What energises you most about working as a Graduate Data Engineer at Vortexa?

Every day is an opportunity to learn something new and to test my knowledge and skills. As a graduate, I still have a lot to learn and Vortexa gives me a great environment to do so, which is perfect!
