After spending eight years in the Financial Services industry Lucy escaped the corporate world and joined the startup world. Since then she has worked in Insurtech and Biotech and now she’s here at Vortexa!

Fun fact: ‘I went to Art College with Toby, the baby in the 1980’s film The Labyrinth with David Bowie.’

We wanted to find out what inspired Lucy to join Vortexa, what some of her biggest milestones have been to date and what day-to-day life really looks like for a HR Business Partner…

What inspired you to join Vortexa?

A number of things. Firstly, you! I knew I wanted to work with you from our first interview. You have a number of qualities as a Head of People that I would love to learn and emulate one day. Secondly, I was looking to join a scale up that was either in, or on, the verge of a Series C round, as I really wanted to expand my Seed to Series B experience. Thirdly, Vortexa’s Glassdoor rating and reviews. Vortexa has an incredible Glassdoor score.

What would you say is the most interesting aspect of your role?

Hands down, the people. I also like that no two days are the same.

What have been some significant milestone moments for you at Vortexa?

Picking up aspects of the Head of People role while you were on maternity leave. I definitely experienced growth in myself and my skill set over those months. It has really given me an insight into what it takes to be a Head of People!

What does day-to-day life look like for you as the HR Business Partner?

I’m an early bird and like to go to the gym as it really helps me mentally. Starting earlier also allows me to clear any admin before getting into my day. In HR it’s safe to say your time is not your own, so a flexible approach to the day is always a must.

There’s a strong sense of belonging at Vortexa.
What key qualities make a HR BP successful?

Coming into every situation with an objective mindset, keeping calm under pressure and empathy.

How would you describe the culture at Vortexa?

Connected, there’s a strong sense of belonging at Vortexa.

What advice would you give to people hoping to join Vortexa?

Be yourself (authenticity), come with ideas and have a can-do mindset.

Describe your working life at Vortexa in three words!

Rewarding, challenging and collaborative.
